The Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners (CWP) is a government-funded, privately managed non-profit organization working to protect the rights and welfare of prisoners across Sindh. Established in 2004 as a pilot initiative at the Women’s Prison, Karachi, under the chairpersonship of Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, the Committee began by providing legal aid and rehabilitation support to women and juvenile prisoners.
Over the years, CWP’s scope expanded to include male prison facilities across Sindh, transforming into a model public–private partnership for prison reform.

PARALEGAL PROGRAMS
Every Prisoner Deserves a Second Chance
The program aims to establish a sustainable system of legal awareness and empowerment within prisons by training selected inmates as paralegals, who then educate fellow prisoners on their rights, duties, and prison procedures. This peer-led model ensures continuity and long-term impact, even beyond formal training sessions.

BEHIND THE PRISON WALLS
On 4 August 2020, the Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners (CWP), with support from Sehat Kahani, organized an online mental health sensitization training for women and juvenile prison staff in Karachi and Hyderabad. The session focused on understanding prisoners’ psychosocial & mental health needs, effective communication with prisoners experiencing mental health conditions, promoting mental wellbeing among prisoners and staff, and reducing stigma and discrimination related to mental health.
Prison staff play a vital role in supporting prisoner wellbeing and preventing poor mental health. Their interactions can significantly influence the mental health of prisoners, making appropriate training and awareness essential.
SKILLS FOR FREEDOM
Keeping rehabilitation needs and economic empowerment of women in consideration, the Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners runs sewing classes for female prisoners in the Women’s Prisons in Karachi and Hyderabad. Sewing teachers conduct classes six days a week for women inmates.
This component has enhanced the livelihood earning capacity of women prisoners through educational, technical and vocational training while also providing constructive recreational avenues for women inmates. Currently, 42 women are engaged in weekly sewing classes.
